거북복과
Family Ostraciidae(Boxfishes, cowfishes, and trunk fishes)

세계에 14속 약 33종, 한국에 3속 4종이 알려져 있다. 거북복과는 2개의 아과(subfamily Aracaninae와 subfamily Ostraciinae)로 이루어져 있는데 각각 독립된 과로 분류시키는 학자도 많다. J.S. Nelson의 “세계의 물고기” 2006년, 제4판과 한국 동물분류학회는 분리시키지 않는다.

지느러미, 꼬리자루, 입, 눈, 항문, 아가미 같은 움직이는 부분만 제외하고 나머지 몸 전체가 단단한 갑옷으로 싸여 있으며 갑옷은 대략 6각형인 골판들이 융합된 것이며 골판들은 비늘의 변형이다. 각 속(genus)들은 몸의 단면 형태가 다르며 단면의 각이 대략 삼각형인 것에서부터 육각형에 이르기까지 다양하다.

보통 각이 돋은 융기부들과 가시들을 가진다. 입은 작으며 무척추동물과 해조류를 베어 먹기에 유리한 예리한 이빨을 가지고 있다. 배지느러미와 다른 지느러미들에 가시는 없다. 포식자를 물리치기 위해 피부를 통해 독성물질을 분비하며 모든 종이 이 기능을 가졌는지는 확실하지 않다. 이 물질은 오스트라키톡신(Ostracitoxin)이라 부른다. 폐쇄된 공간에 있으면 독성에 의해 자신이 죽을 수도 있다. 수족관 관상용으로 부적합하다.

헤엄치는 속도는 매우 느리다. 어떤 때는 입으로 물바람을 불어서 모래를 파헤쳐 작은 무척추동물과 해조류를 찾아내 먹는다. 알은 수공간에 산란시킨다. 일부 종들은 암수의 모양이 다르며 수컷이 화려하다. 일부 종들은 암컷이 수컷으로 변한다.

Family Ostraciidae
Boxfishes, cowfishes, and trunk fishes

14 genera about 33 species worldwide, 3 genera 4 species in Korea. Consists of two subfamilies(Aracaninae and Ostraciinae), many authors recognize the two subfamilies as separate families(Aracanidae and Ostraciidae). ‘Fishes of the World(J.S. Nelson 2006)’ and The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology do not accept the separation of this family. The Korean name of this family means ‘the turtle’

The body is largely covered with well defined hexagonal bony plates, fused into a ridged case with holes for the moving parts, the fins, caudal peduncle, mouth, eyes, anus, and gills. The genera differ primarily in cross-section shapes, with flat to rounded bellies, tapering above slightly to almost a square or a broad triangle with a dorsal ridge. Some species have prominant spines above eyes or on back.

 The mouth is small with stout conical to incisiform teeth used for feeding on small sessile invertebrates and algae. The body is covered with a toxic(Ostracitoxin) mucus, which deter predators but also the toxin is released when under stress, killing other fish or themselves if kept confined. Not recommended for aquaria.

Some species are sexually dimorphic with colourful males, the latter derives from females. Release pelagic eggs.
